Since the 1976 Judgment of Paris, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has held a distinctive place in the global fine-wine market. From the late 1980s onward, the region’s rise was driven by wines showing ripe fruit, deep flavours, and a distinct style. Influential voices including Robert Parker helped establish Napa Cabernet as a benchmark for premium New World wine, reinforcing its reputation for richness, concentration, and sensual appeal.Over time, however, the conversation around Napa has broadened. In 2013, Jon Bonné articulated this shift in his book The New California Wine, introducing producers who focused on balance, freshness, and vineyard expression, alongside Napa’s innate richness. He showed that Napa Valley Cabernet can express refinement and elegance while remaining unmistakably Napa, and these ideas gradually spread from local wineries to international markets, including Japan. His ideas closely reflect the styles Village Cellars have long liked to work with. The Cabernets presented here are not new arrivals, but wines we’ve carried for some time, and as global tastes increasingly align with their balance and clarity, now feels like the right moment to reintroduce them as one of the many possibilities Napa offers — approachable, food-friendly expressions that also represent excellent value. For these three wines, we received comments, including food suggestions, from food and beverage professionals.#12182 Madison’s Ranch Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2020Origin: Napa Valley, California [MAP①(Winery)]Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon 100%Alc.14.5%RRP incl. tax ¥6,490From multiple Napa Valley vineyards. Despite its powerful tannins, it has a surprisingly smooth mouthfeel and a long finish.Food pairing: Well-balanced and versatile, it complements game dishes like venison and duck, as well as being a refreshing after-dinner drink. Hard bedrock is covered by poor, sedimentary soils mixed with pebbles. Primarily from young vines. French oak.Pure, elegant, and classically structuredHendry is one of Napa Valley’s leading Cabernet producers. Founded in 1939 at the foot of Mount Veeder, the winery continued to supply its acclaimed Cabernet fruit to Opus One under a long-term agreement with Mondavi, but now produces its own wines. “HRW” stands for Hendry Ranch Wines, and this range features a lighter style than the flagship “Hendry” label, using grapes from younger vines.Tasting Notes: Bright red fruits. Fresh acidity gives the wine a three-dimensional crisp texture, while the tannins are fine-grained and classic in texture.
